Day 2 of Modern Warfare 2 and the first hacks are already up for downloads

November 12th, 2009 Tim Aksu 1 comment

It’s only been 2 days since Modern Warfare 2’s release, and them hackers have cracked the game already. Bypassing anti-cheat software, the hacking program allows the user to see the location of enemies through walls (Wall hacking), gives the user perfect hipfire accuracy, and causes the cursor to clip to enemies heads when you aim for them. (aim bot).

It’s a server administrators worst nightmare, but we dont need to worry about it on MW2, because we have no administrators.I’m talking about the “worst nightmare” part, ofcourse. We’ll still have the hackers. Once VAC (Valve Anti Cheat) gives you the OK, there is no actual moderators to see that your obviously hacking and kick you. Another “i told you so” for the boycotters :D

now i dont promote hacking, but im just showing you this video for the sole purpose of … well .. lol’s, and just to rub in how silly the idea of giving IW-net control over everything was.

try to spread the word. Personally i believe this news needs to get big enough for Infinity Ward to decide they need to step in and patch up the game with a few moderation tools. (Vote for kick, etc?)…maybe.. :(

Enjoy!

IW-Net really doesn’t care about your ping

November 11th, 2009 Tim Aksu No comments
Go away.
Go away.

After playing heavily for 2 days straight, some of IW-Nets annoying habits are becoming more and more obvious.

IW-net’s match making seems to check 3 conditions, and if any one of those conditions are true, it’ll give you the go ahead to join the server it’s found. Ping seems to be the last one of these conditions that a game needs to fit be considered matchmaking worthy..

Firstly, IW checks skill levels. When i first played, i was obviously considered unskilled by IW-net and i was allowed to join alot of games easily. Because my options where so open, i got allot of servers with low ping. excellent. something else i got allot of on those servers where kill’s. i dont mean to brag or anything (no really i dont) but im a competitive CoD4 player. Im no where near the best, but its enough advantage over casual gamers to top charts in every single game. After a day of this, IW-net read its ugly head and i guess had another look at my “skill level”. From this morning on, servers took longer to find, and the connections where not as great. Infact, i did not play a single 4 bar game today, 1 3 bar, and the rest where 2 or under. I constantly get matched with players in USA/Europe. I am litteraly the only one with a single bar on ping with everyone else on 3 or 4. But my rank is similar to everyone elses, and the game is harder (whether its because of ping or their skill level we can never be sure…but im not topping the boards any more :P ).

Second it prefers full servers over less populated, local ones. it doesn’t (or hasnt for me, anyway) seem to want to create a new server just for the sake of it being local. you’ll get directed to full servers as much as possible, sometimes with little regard to lag.

Third ofcourse, comes ping. I’d rather just not play to be honest. Silly IW-net, 100+ ms ping is not really great.

Oh, theres a really tiny possibility that everyone in Australia has spontaneously stopped playing today. (which’d actually be really cool..but its very unlikely). :P

Lastly i’d like to add that even though my review shed a bit of positive light on the game, i’d like to ask the PC community to continue asking for Dedicated Servers. Do not bend over backwards for Infinity Ward and offer them suggestions to fix this. Peer 2 peer multiplayer is ancient technology. we need to move on; not try and make do. If Infinity Ward gets away with this this time, then don’t expect many more Modern Warfares with dedicated servers. Telling them that we’ll play if they fix X and Y of IW-net is the same as telling them that its good except for a few tiny issues. which it obviously isnt. I have included 2 very popular videos on the side bar that explain dedicated servers/Iw-net if you do not yet fully understand. “ We may have lost the war, but we havent lost the battle”! (CoD4 reference, get it? :D yea :( )

Modern Warfare 2 – Multiplayer Review

November 10th, 2009 Tim Aksu 23 comments
d

(PC) Firstly i want to start by saying that this game takes ages to install. an hour and 17 minutes to be exact in my case. its huge, so if you don’t have the time to spare, dont start installing.

im going to jump straight into multiplayer here:

the gameplay online itself is fun, ill be man enough to say that regardless of what other PC players might think of me. Weapons “feel” good to use – their tiny iron scopes and lessened recoil make them enjoyable to fire. The maps look spectacular. Granted, the graphics are the same as CoD4, but they’ve really pushed their engine a little bit further this time by making the scenes very busy. Pipes, plants, all those doodads. they’re everywhere. The games are fast despite the 12 person limit (For deathmatches)- you’re almost always going to run into someone when you turn the corner. I don’t think this is because the maps are small. The maps are actually pretty big. Bigger than i thought when i first saw some trailers atleast. I’m thinking that better respawn positioning is to thank for that. There are heaps of things to unlock, so there is always something new to see at the end of each round. When compared to a CoD4 6 v 6 no mod’s deathmatch, this definitely wins by a mile. Another plus worth noticing is that it plays very very smooth. It’s graphics are fairly equal to that of CoD4, but my laptop could only churn out 25 FPS for it. Im running at atleast 60 MOST OF THE TIME right now. I cant give an exact figure as there is no console to enable fps drawing.

But any PC FPS gamer can see it wont last forever with IW-net controlling everything. i still want my hectic 15 v 15 or even old school games every now and then. I personally never liked big 30+ man games where my kills and deaths did not effect the overall outcome much), but what i like and dont like doesnt matter – its the community as a whole. and ALOT of people like it. (listening IW?) They where always just fun to play now and again. it saddens me that even though IW have the neccesary functionality in the game, they dont add it.

d

Screen 3 shows all your server selection customization options.

Waiting for IW-net to “quickly and easily” put me into an online game did not take very long at all – 5 seconds maximum. However, all the “filtering” options mentioned in interviews are total BS. Your options are only to choose the gametype (some of which are initialy locked, all the way to level 19! .. you’re just not allowed to choose that game type.. -_- theres one use for IW-net.). other than that, no control – you cant pick how many players, skill level, old school (doesn’t exist), custom time limits, custom player numbers (Deathmatch is 6 v 6 and there is nothing you can do a bout it). If you’re trying “customize” your game, then you better have game type in mind, because you cant even select maps – you can only vote to skip the map. 7 votes are needed out of the 12 to skip a map. Yep, IW-net controls EVERYTHING. i can see where they where going with this – make it easier and what not but seriously, selecting a map, game type, time limit, etc like you could in MW was not that hard. does IW take its customers to be mentally handy capped in some (or all) ways?

The 0 amount of control includes deciding who hosts and doesn’t host the server. You cannot opt out of server hosting. in australia, we dont exactly have great internet plans – they’re mostly slow and full of download limits. hosting your own server for this game is just NOT going to work very well.

oh and lag: Unless you’re on 4 bars (max), you WILL have noticeable lag. at first tiny, but eventually you’ll start seeing enemies die after you’ve emptied a clip/reloaded, fall damages registering 3 or 4 seconds later, etc.

[start sarcasm here] Atleast pc gets custom support for those cool mouse and keyboard things that only the bestest PC players have! :D [end sarcasm here]

If you’ve got questions about the game that you need answered before you buy it, jot it down in the comments bellow.

Anyway, some tips and hints:

  • Every kill streak abillity, when called in, appears on the map regardless of the team (with the exception of stealth bomber (which you can hear coming) and UAV’s). So use your map to get out of the way of helicopters/harriers and predator missile strikes.
  • When you call in a predator missile, the left mouse button will speed up the missile. It doesnt cause more damage or anything but because everyone can see where the missile will land, most people try to get out of the way – you can speed up your missile to catch them before they do.
  • To change your in-game name, you have to access that steam community thing with shift + tab and click on settings on the bottom. A window will open up that allows you to change your name and some other settings.
  • Riot shields do not block grenade blasts. Try getting your stickynades attached to the other guys riot shield.
  • When up against a riot shield, assuming you’ve got no nades, do not run away from him. Run towards him. if he tries to change to secondary, shoot. Once you get up and close, you can simply knife him from the back. (he will be moving a little slower than you).
  • If the riot shielder is backed up by other players, shoot his legs. If possible though, completely ignore him and shoot his friends first.
  • Akimbo – useless. You cant aim down iron sights so unless his in your face, good luck with taking him out. If you really want to use it, steady aim is a must.
  • Pistols are still useful – its much faser to swap to a pistol then a shot gun/machine pistol.
  • You can steal enemy (or friendly) care packages. It will take you considerably longer to do so than your own ones so make sure the enemies are cleared first.
  • Care packages can kill you if it lands on you – and also kill others (including friendly).
  • You can shoot down the enemy UAV’s (and anything else of the enemies that flies).

Shattered Horizon – Amazing

November 6th, 2009 Tim Aksu 1 comment

We’ll, Infinity Ward may have stuffed up completely, but atleast some companies still have an understanding of how to be successful on PC. Not only does Shattered Horizon offer a unique, never before explored type of game play, but it sits at only $20 with free downloadable content and with full multiplayer dedicated server support. Infinity Ward should be taking some notes right now from Futuremark, the ones behind this highly anticipated game. This is their first game too -- and they’re playing all their cards right so far. Just goes to show that if even a new company like this can get it all right, it should be pretty hard for someone like IW to get it wrong. Ah well..anyway…

Game has alot of interesting concepts. Firstly there is no up or down. Looks as though you can get very dizzy playing it. Luckly you’r able to “land” on metal surfaces (with, i guess, magnet boots or something) such as on the station it self, so your not always just floating about.  It looks VERY fast paced. The player in that video always hip fires -- maybe aiming down iron scopes isnt an option or more likely it’s just extreamly useless at those speeds. There doesn’t appear to be any variation of weaponry, but no one can confirm that just yet. Lastly i like how that sound is “simulated” in the suit. Interesting concept again :D works very nicely. (first part of the video looks sexy).

BestBuy Live chat session – Modern Warfare 2

November 4th, 2009 Tim Aksu No comments
  click

As most of you know, the BestBuy hosted a Live Chat Session with Vince Zampella and Robert Bowling. Hit the jump (read more) for a PC multiplayer and IW-net related transcript of the chat session. Here are  the few “highlights” of the chat session..

  • Dedicated server questions were greeted by being escorted out of the chat.
  • Max players for all versions is 9v9. Yes, I said 9v9.
  • No record feature in MW2 for PC.
  • No lean in the PC version (Mackey-IW: The game is not balanced for lean.)
  • PC Game is not yet finished

More and more bad news. It’s a complete joke. It’s as if they didnt even consider PC when developing IW, realized how shit it was for PC when they finished, and are now trying to defend it. It’s downright pathetic.

3 of my favorite Q&A’s:

frzg
Is there a /record feature? Answer yes… please. We’re trying to give you a ‘chance’

Vince-IW
no

Laugh
Is there a console in the PC version of the game, so we can change our field of view from the xbox’s default 65 FOV to 80 also can we tweaks the weapon damage for each gun, removes perks, graphical debris, breathing sway, also thru console like we where able to before or is this all gone?

Vince-IW
We would like you to play the game the way we designed and balanced it.

Hahah, rich. so much for listening to your customers, IW.

Moriarte

Ignoring IW.net, is the PC version a direct port of the console version?
Mackey-IW

No, PC has custom stuff like mouse control, text chat in game, and graphics settings.

no comment on this one. seriously.

Fix WLM and Make Taskbar Like Vista

November 2nd, 2009 Tim Aksu No comments

  • Taskbar icons. They’re big, they’re not descriptive. I can have 3 Windows Live Messenger conversations open at once, and they’ll all be displayed under one taskbar icon. When someone talks to me, the icon flashes giving no indication of who is talking. This is just one example, but it applies to other applications as well.
  • to fix it: Right click on task bar -> Properties. Tick “Use small icons” and in the “Taskbar Buttons” drop down, select “Never combine”. Sexy!
top: Default Win7. Bottom: Fixed. You can see how the default version gives no information about what the 2 different Chrome Windows are. You need to hover over it and wait a couple of seconds for Win7 to show the 2 seperate windows in that jumplist thing. The few seconds of waiting gets pretty annoying for us power users.

  • Windows Live Messenger. Shows a tab in the taskbar for your current account. *Account name* (status). It serves no purpose. Clicking on it will open up the main WLM windows (With your list of contacts, etc). If you try to close it, it closes WLM instead of putting WLM into the System tray.
  • To fix it: Navigate to WLM directory -> right click on “msnmsgr.exe” -> Properties. Under the compatibility tab, choose to run in compatibility mode for “Vista”. Apply. WLM will not minimize to system tray. Neat!
  • Note that other programs which behave odd can be fixed this way too.

Be excited about formatting: Ninite

October 29th, 2009 Tim Aksu No comments

Everyones lived through the tedious task of needing to re-collect all their common applications (VLC/browser/picasa etc) after a format. The first few times are fun as you go and dig around for new and exciting software to replace what you previously had…but you eventually build a list of applications that will never get replaced and when you need to look for these over and over again after formats, it just isnt very entertaining.

For this, Ninite comes to the rescue. Ninite is a very very cool website/application (websitelication? lol). On it, you’ll find a list of those things you install every time you format your computer. You choose the files you want and you can then download an installer customized specifically to give you the applications you chose. The installer downloads installers for those applications and installs them without ever asking you or showing you anything – it installs everything into the default location, and makes sure tool bar downloads or other crapware aren’t included. The installers are removed after completion and your new OS is ready to go. It actually made me excited to format my laptop and put on Win7.

DDOS attack on Infinity Ward

October 28th, 2009 Tim Aksu 13 comments
Once a loved and heavily supported company by FPS PC gamers

Once heavily supported by FPS PC gamers

The 4chan is known to have had an involvement in the mass spamming that took place a few nights ago and they are probably behind this possible DDOS attack too. sort of a crap thing to say but i support them. there really isnt much else we can do as customers right now; we’ve already canceled our pre-orders but being the minority means that that didnt have such a huge effect. (for those who dont know whats going on, google for “MW2 Dedicated servers” and you’ll find out).

The reason i think it is a DDOS attack is because of this error message which just started showing up a few hours ago (Prior to this, a similar (not not as specific) phpBB error was shown).

Modern Warfare 2 – interview

October 17th, 2009 Tim Aksu No comments

Thing ive noticed:

  • The riot shield will indeed replace your primary weapon slot.
  • The glass reacts in a revolutionary way (shatters better).
  • There will be vehicles on multiplayer. (Another BF2 clone? Hopefully not).

“Cars aren’t safe…they will blow up”.

If they are as easy to blow up as they are in Modern Warfare 2 then we shouldnt have too much of an issue.

  • Blood splatter will get annoying. Fast.
  • The glass is epic.
  • For when the players are damaged or killed, they’re still using a pre-made animation followed by rag-doll (if the player died). The Euphoria engine works nicely in GTA4 and should be more widely used. It’ll definitely make things look alot nicer.
  • Navmap: Photoshop + Old cod4 navmap had a baby. alot of outer glow happening on all the icons.
  • No really, apparently the glass is really good.
  • Not really much of an upgrade. A new story line, new game multiplayer game mode and new guns, sure, but thats really all nothing more than what an expansion pack would have done. They’re even reusing some resources from MW. Most notable some of the cars. Do the cars at 24 seconds in look familiar?  What about all the shacks in the background? and the death by dog sequence? Yea.
  • Theres also a feature we’ve never seen thats said to be revolutionizing in-game glass shatter effects.

but seriously, you could replace the poster in the background with a Modern Warfare one, and most of what he is saying would still be valid. Infinity Ward has drained this engine enough. Time for something new guys. Something better. Come on.

Mouses playing computer games

October 17th, 2009 Tim Aksu 1 comment

this mouse is running through a virtual reality landscape. unfortunately for it the harness looks darn uncomfortable and the world is fairly boring. They could have atleast used something like the Maze screen saver from the old windows 98. now that would have been pretty cool. :D ah well. Mouses will be dominating an MMO server near you soon. Be on the look out.

i have no idea what they are trying to achieve with this experiment. If you do, jot down a comment.
